Cal State L.A.Âs Caryn Sale Named
LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A. senior middle blocker Caryn Sale (Mission Viejo, CA/Capo Valley) has been named the Molten USA California Collegiate Athletic Association Volleyball Player of the Week, as announced this afternoon by the conference office. This is the third time in 11 weeks this season that Sale has earned the nod (September 17 and September 24).
Sale led Cal State L.A. to three road victories last week, keeping the Golden Eagles NCAA Tournament hopes alive. She opened the week by hitting .524 without an error in a Halloween sweep at Cal State Dominguez Hills. On the weekend at Chico State and UC Davis, she tallied 33 kills, 18 digs and 12 blocks in the wins against the Wildcats and Aggies, while hitting a combined .355 in those two victories.
For the entire weekend, Sale hit .392, collecting 44 kills on 97 swings while making just six hitting errors. She also added 24 digs, 14 blocks, six assists and five aces in the three matches. When you count her kills, blocks, aces and assists together, Sale had a direct hand in 69 points for the week, an average of nearly six points per game. She also was a part of 14 of CSLA's 26 team blocks in the three matches.
SaleÂs .524 hitting percentage at CSUDH was the sixth time this season she has topped the .500 barrier. Following Saturday night's .419 performance at UCD, she has now topped .400 in nine matches. All nine of her .400+ matches, which includes her six .500+ matches, have come in conference play this year.
Cal State L.A. (17-10 overall, 15-5 CCAA) has won seven-straight matches and eight of the last nine entering the final weekend of the regular season. The Golden Eagles travel to Cal State Bakersfield on Friday night before concluding the regular season on Saturday night at Cal State Stanislaus. Pairings for the NCAA Regionals are expected to be announced Sunday night.
