Cal State L.A., Los Angeles County Probation Department team up to enhance the degree to probation career pipeline

What & Who:  The School of Criminal Justice and Criminalistics at Cal State L.A. has partnered with the Los Angeles County Probation Department (LACPD) to launch a Probation Service Learning Pilot Program this fall. The pilot program aims to directly influence the next generation of probation officers and lay the foundation to build a “degree to probation career pipeline” for criminal justice students at Cal State L.A.
On Monday, Dec. 8, there will be an opportunity to meet the first group of service learning program participants who will present their pilot work projects under the mentorship of Probation Department supervisors.  The projects include:
  • Working on the family violence and sexual registrant caseloads at the LACPD’s Crenshaw office to determine the compliance of offenders with the terms of probation;
  • Conducting research on the containment model, which is a sex offender supervision program that helps reintegrate offenders back into the community through treatment classes;
  • Observing and evaluating the AWARE camp program, which is aimed at reintegrating minors back into the community and assisting them in developing the social skills and behavior management skills needed to lead a law-abiding life;
  • Researching techniques to help with the transition of commercially sexually exploited children back into the community through services offered at Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall; and more.

Professor Denise Herz, the primary components of the partnership include engaging students in probation service learning opportunities, integrating probation expertise in the classroom and in the curriculum, and providing continuing education to probation officers.
