Cal State L.A. is one of the top public universities in the western United States, according to the 2016 U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges edition released Tuesday.

Cal State L.A. is ranked 18th among western public universities by the magazine, which based its assessments on critical indicators such as graduation rate performance, retention rates, faculty resources and alumni contributions.

Among all universities in the West--public and private--Cal State L.A. recorded the biggest gain in the rankings of any university in the 23-campus California State University system.

The report also signaled out Cal State L.A.'s engineering program in the College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology as one of the nation’s best undergraduate programs. Among public, master’s awarding institutions, the engineering program climbed to the sixth spot, up one notch from last year. Cal State L.A.’s business program in the College of Business and Economics is one of the top 10 in California among public institutions.

Cal State L.A. was also ranked in the top 10 best public universities in the West for veterans. The Veterans Resource Center at Cal State L.A. specializes in offering academic support counseling, peer counseling and other services to students who are veterans.

“Our higher rankings reflect our commitment to student success,” Cal State L.A. President William A. Covino said. “We continue to create an environment that allows our students to reach their full potential, and our national recognition continues to grow.”

U.S. News also highlighted Cal State L.A. for affordability. The University’s bachelor’s recipients have the third lowest debt among schools in the West.

This year's U.S. News Best Colleges edition includes data on nearly 1,300 colleges and universities. Eligible schools are ranked on as many as 16 measures of academic excellence to help families compare schools, narrow their searches and make informed decisions.
