December 9, 2015

Senior outside hitter is majoring in exercise science and has a 3.64 grade point average

Iona Lofrano, a senior who helped lead the Golden Eagles women’s volleyball team to one of its most successful seasons in years, earned Academic All-America honors Wednesday from the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Lofrano, an outside hitter who hails from the small town of Meadow Vista in Northern California, earned the recognition for her outstanding efforts in the classroom and on the court.

Lofrano is majoring in exercise science and has a grade point average of 3.64. She is only the second Cal State LA volleyball player—and one of 11 University student athletes overall--to have earned Academic All-America honors. Lofrano also was a recipient of the 2015 Cal State LA Billie Jean King scholarship.

Wednesday’s announcement capped a week of exciting news for the women’s volleyball program. Lofrano and teammate JamieAnn Bero earned athletic All-America honors on Tuesday from the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

The Golden Eagles squad finished its season with a solid 19-11 record and qualified for the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament.
