Dozens of middle and high school students clad in Dodger blue paid a visit to the Cal State LA campus this week for a tour—and a taste of what might await them after high school.

The students were greeted by Eddie the Golden Eagle and Cal State LA President William A. Covino, who talked about the university’s success in transforming the lives of its graduates. Cal State LA is ranked number one in the nation for the upward mobility of it students.

“We have a higher proportion of students who go on into careers that earn over $100,000 than any university in the country,” he said. “We are number one in the country for student success.”

The campus tour was sponsored by Dodgers RBI, a youth development initiative of the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation. The program, for young people from 11 to 18, aims to increase participation in the sport, while building character, promoting good health and improving access to higher education. Several of the students who visited Wednesday already have family members or friends who attend Cal State LA.

“Do your best in school right now,” Covino advised. “You’re going to learn a lot about where your future can lead you.”

The Wednesday tour was a prelude to Cal State LA Night at Dodger Stadium, which takes place on Friday, Aug. 3, and features a rematch of last year’s World Series battle between the Dodgers and the Houston Astros, followed by a post-game fireworks display.

More than 1,000 university students, staff and alumni are expected to attend. The special event tickets include stadium admission and a black-and-gold co-branded Cal State LA cap. They can be purchased on the MLB website.
