The Educational Legacy of the 1968 East LA Walkouts: Walk-in to Cal State LA
– Friday, March 2, 2018 –

DEADLINE TO SUBMIT PROPOSAL: January 28, 2018

Submit proposals and inquiries to Vice Provost for Diversity

On March 1, 1968, hundreds of students began to walk out of high schools on the East Side of Los Angeles in protest of poor educational conditions, exclusionary policies, and discriminatory educational practices.
Within weeks, thousands of students across many other LA high schools joined the student protests, which later became known as the East Los Angeles Blowouts/Walk-outs.

The Walk-outs left a valuable educational legacy that continues to benefit all students and their communities in LA. Indeed, given the large population of Latina/o students today, Cal State LA is also a direct beneficiary of the courageous stance taken by the high school students in 1968.

In recognition of the educational legacy created by the 1968 East LA Walkouts, the Office of the Vice Provost for Diversity and Engaged Learning is hosting a free, two-day conference at Cal State LA on Thursday, March 1 and Friday, March 2, 2018. You are cordially invited to attend day-long conference on Thursday, March 1 in the G.E. Ballrooms (for program details, please visit: http://www.calstatela.edu/academicaffairs/diversity )

We also invite you to submit a brief proposal for a presentation or workshop on the second day of the conference, Friday, March 2, 2018. On day two, we will host approximately 700 high school students as they Walk-In to Cal State LA from five of the original ELA Walkout legacy high schools (Roosevelt, Belmont, Wilson, Garfield, Lincoln). The students will arrive that Friday morning and receive a warm welcome by President William A. Covino, Provost Lynn Mahoney, faculty, students, and staff. After a morning program and lunch, they will be escorted to one of 20 break-out classrooms where they will attend one of the many presentations led by Cal State LA faculty, staff or students.

All presentations will be held in King Hall classrooms between 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. We especially welcome interactive presentations or workshops that address the educational legacy of the Walk-outs, and strongly encourage joint presentations by faculty and student(s). Below are some guiding themes to consider for your proposal:

1.    Transgenerational leadership for educational success
2.    Immigration and education
3.    Continuities in educational conditions: 1968 to the present
4.    Enacting student leadership strategies for educational, social, and political change
