Coming live to Cal State L.A. from the White House on Friday, Oct. 23, will be the ÂThe PresidentÂs Own United States Marine BandÂAmericaÂs oldest musical organization. Founded in 1798 by an Act of Congress, the Marine Band has performed for every U.S. President since John Adams.
Directed by Colonel Michael J. Colburn, the free Cal State L.A. concertÂto be held 7:30 p.m. at the Luckman TheatreÂwill feature a suite from Sergei ProkofiefÂs Romeo and Juliet, Joseph De LucaÂs ÂBeautiful Colorado (with a euphonium solo), a baritone rendering of George Frideric HandelÂs ÂArm, Arm, Ye Brave from Judas Maccabeaus, and three of John Philip Sousa compositionsÂincluding the national march of the United States, ÂThe Stars and Stripes Forever. There will also be a salute to the U.S. Armed Forces.
According to First Lady Michelle Obama, ÂThe Marine Band has been just a tremendous resource for us. They have such great range. They can play everything from jazz to country, and theyÂve made every event at the White House a special one.Â
